How could I set the stage while I'm at my consulting firm to exit into a strategy role at companies such as Google or Facebook?

I will soon be a consultant (post-MBA) at my firm, and would like to hear from ex-consultants who exited into strategy roles at top technology companies on how they did it.

Loving the South Park references, JYFresh.

I am not in the position you're trying to seek, but I have had three or four colleagues exit into roles at Google/Facebook/Twitter. Below are just some commonalities among these people -- this is certainly not an exhaustive list.

  1. They know how to code, or can at least somewhat read it.
  2. They did work at an earlier-stage company and played a key role in one of its growth initiatives
  3. They worked on a project for one of these firms, and networked hard with the employees they met there.
  4. They had experience on at least one financial project.

Did corporate strat at a top tech company.

There are some issues with doing strategy at those top tech companies (Facebook/google etc) - pm for deets.

Coding is honestly not necessary - but please please learn SQL. (you and your team will thank you). Info on customers/sales etc are now all in databases and to derive any sort of recommendation or strategy you really need to know how to extract info from there.

Any other thoughts on value of learning SQL? I've got a couple months before bschool starts...wondering if I can make any meaningful strides by then..

How well-versed does your SQL skill need to be?

I've had to pick up how to write queries in SQL Server and Microsoft Access on my own in a few of my past projects, and the learning largely involved Googling functions / solutions and trial-and-error until it works.

Should I take classes / learning modules on SQL ?
