How to go from MBB To PE
Joining McK NY soon.
I understand that a lot of people want the jump from MBB consulting to PE. I really want to expand my options and have this as a potential path in the future. Should I tailor time to be staffed on PE DD deals if I want to pivot in the future? Any tips or recs for me to best prepare while I’m so early on in my career? Would a jump to PE ops be doable? What about sell side?
Any advice is highly appreciated.
Extra note: I’m from a non target school and no MBA.

Definitely try to get on DDs, but that's definitely not a requirement. I'd make sure to study up on finance skills because consulting doesn't really teach you the technical skills in finance. And make sure to do well, because I've heard of PE firms 'asking around' to see how strong of a performer you are. But I'm not sure how true this is.
I'd work with headhunters (they will be reaching out to you once you start MBB) and target funds that are open to consulting/MBB experience. Contrary to the common belief, MBB --> PE is not an 'easy' switch and requires dedication and self-study. It's definitely easier of a pivot if you went to a target uni, majored in finance, and/or did a lot of DDs in consulting.
Thank you for the advice! I figured it wouldn’t be easy but it seems I really need to start utilizing the firm and network to get on more DD/model building teams/deals. Thank you for the insights once again, I truly truly appreciate it!
