Importance of different Russell Group Unis?

Currently starting University in September, looking at going into Consulting / Real Estate - I was wondering if all Russell Group Unis are viewed as ‘target schools’? I will be attending University of Liverpool, although I know it is not Oxbridge / LSE, I was wondering if I could still have a shot at getting to MBB / similar depending on what I decide I want to go into. Anyone have any experience with this / knowledge? Would be very appreciated.

Congratulations on starting university this autumn!

As for targets, for us it's definitely Oxbridge / London Unis / Warwick as top priorities. I don't think I know anyone from U Liverpool. Now that doesn't make it impossible at all (my undergrad is a uni that wouldn't ever get looked at).

If you are intent on going to MBB / T2, you can always start by trying to land an internship if you can (be advised, Bain London does not do undergrad interns, unfortunately, but others do, I believe), or landing a role in a well-known company after graduation and then trying to recruit as an experienced hire after 2-3 years.

In the meantime, there are things you can/should do to enhance your CV (good news is you have all the time in the world):

  • Nail your academics - you will need to be doing really well throughout your entire degree, consistency of excellence is always a great indicator (alternatively starting low ending high is good because it shows you overcame something, but there should be a reason for starting low other than "didn't feel like studying / preferred drinking")
  • Engage in extracurriculars - to demonstrate "entrepreneuship", you need to show you do things above and beyond just showing up and doing well (point 1 above, which is really just the bare minimum expected). Join a society / club / sports team / affinity group and be active in it, organise events, become the treasurer, become president, anything. Show you have more in your life than doing homework and taking exams (without jeopardising doing those really well, otherwise it shows lack of judgement and balance)
  • Get an internship between Y2 & Y3 - even if you don't land a consulting internship (or maybe you want to do something else instead), you should get some real work experience somewhere. Now, if the company is well-known, great, if it is a top 3-5 in its industry, it's better (if it's both, awesome). Again, this shows that (a) you can work and operate in a work environment, (b) you can get into something selective, and (c) you have experience working for the best in their field. Better to work for Glencore (top mining company) than for Volvo or Vauxhall (well-known car markers, but poor performers in their industry).

If there is no recruitment event on your campus, it's ok, try to attend open events (online / in-person) organised by those firms. These should be advertised on each firm's careers website. And at some point (although not now because it's way too early), try to contact a few people from those firms (either alumni or people you can find a good kinship with, e.g., both students of bioengineering or something) to ask some questions / get some advice from.
