Incoming IB SA -> Consulting FT

Hey everyone, As an incoming IB SA interested in recruiting for consulting FT, I was wondering:

  1. Are timelines for FT recruiting similar to IB? Say interviews would begin august/september? Or are they totally random based on needs?

  2. Would it make more sense to do ~1yr in banking and lateral or try to recruit FT post grad?

  3. What team should I try to get placed into for the best experience to leverage for consulting? I'm assuming M&A or some sort of coverage team.

Thanks in advance!

Ah, swinging from the vines of IB to the consulting jungle, are we? Let's break down your expedition plan:

  1. FT Recruiting Timelines: In the realm of investment banking (IB), the full-time (FT) recruiting timeline can indeed start as early as August or September, especially for those coming out of summer analyst (SA) positions. This timeline can vary based on the bank and the specific needs of the firm. Consulting firms, while also having structured recruiting cycles, can differ slightly. Many top consulting firms start their recruiting processes in the fall for full-time positions post-graduation. However, it's crucial to keep an eye out for specific firms' timelines as they can vary and sometimes have additional rounds or off-cycle recruiting based on project needs.

  2. Banking First or Straight to Consulting?: This is a strategic question. Spending about a year in banking before moving to consulting can provide you with a solid foundation in financial analysis, deal structures, and a high-pressure work environment, all of which are valuable in consulting. However, if your ultimate goal is consulting, recruiting directly for FT positions post-graduation can get you there without the detour. It really depends on your career goals, the experience you wish to gain, and how you want to shape your professional story.

  3. Ideal Team Placement for Consulting Leverage: M&A teams offer a fantastic overview of the deal-making process, strategic considerations, and financial analysis, all of which are highly relevant to consulting. Coverage teams, depending on the industry, can also provide deep dives into specific sectors, offering insights that are valuable in a consulting context, especially if you're interested in specializing. Both paths offer skills that are transferable to consulting, such as analytical thinking, project management, and client interaction.

Remember, the jungle is vast, and there are many paths to explore. Whether you start in IB and transition to consulting or head straight into the consulting forest, focus on building a toolkit of skills and experiences that will make you a versatile and valuable professional. Good luck on your adventure!
