Intended New Grad Loooking for Consulting Job
I'm a first time poster looking to get some advice on what I should do. I will be finishing up my third year at a none target school in June and have everything needed to graduate with a econ major and history minor except for a full-time offer upon graduation. I interviewed lightly with such firms as CEB and some others outside of consulting in fall 08 but have only recently seriously considered graduating at the end of my junior year.
So for the past few months I have been applying like mad to a lot of entry-level positions but to no avail. As of right now, I have a 3.5 cum gpa with a 3.7-3.8 in my major. I also have 2 internships at a small brokerage house and a insurance agency, and I have decent ec. I haven't been getting any interviews from some of the big name consulting firms or even the boutique ones like LEK & Monitor and there are slim pickings at my school's career fairs. I have a couple government interviews coming up, but I would like to be in a good position for applying to MBA schools. So I turn to you guys. What should I do? Should I keep looking and hope to land something? ( right now I am waiting on two health-care consultancies to get back to me for interviews, Triage and ZS, but other than that I have nothing except state jobs)Or should I stay in school and pick up another minor to wait for fall recruiting?
Thanks in advance for you responses.
If you want to go that route, what about a one year grad program? That would certainly add more value than another minor. Depending on the government programs, those could also position you for an MBA. Or if you are thinking MBA long term, something like teach for america would be very attractive and be a fun few years.
I go to a target in the West and I can tell you that a lot of boutiques/smaller guys like Katzenbach, L.E.K., OW, Mercer, etc. aren't recruting SAs this year so I wouldn't hold out much hope if you go to a non-target.
I haven't networked so you might want to look into that.
I'll look into graduate school options but at this point I haven't taking any standardized test courses since I found out early February that I could graduate. On the other hand, my ideal course would be to transition into some business/finance related job field that would be a 2 year stint. Any ideas on where I should look besides my school's career center and company listings on vault? What types of companies would take someone of my credentials? I'll also try to shoot out some emails to old bosses and supervisors though I don't think they will help much.
