MBB experienced hire

I am 28 yo male with a top engineering (non target school) computer science master's degree. I was in a consulting club during my undergrad years. I have worked for a renowned research institute and pharma company as a computational biologist for ~3 years with several top journal papers published. Recently I've been thinking about transitioning to consulting and am curious if I qualify for experienced hire (or APD? but it seems they need PhD) for MBB. Do I still need an MBA to break into this field?  Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's absolutely possible to break into consulting without an MBA. In fact, most consulting firms are now primarily looking for people from a variety of backgrounds. You will need, however, to be able to explain your educational and professional experiences, why you took that path and why it makes you valuable. You also need to demonstrate your drive, achievement and problem-solving abilities.

However, it's important to note that coming to consulting with no relevant background can be challenging. You will need to learn a lot about excel and powerpoint and the post-undergrads will be better and smarter than you. That's on top of learning an industry, learning the language, adjusting to new deadlines and building confidence to pitch your ideas.

In terms of the MBA, it's not a strict requirement. Real Experience often beats an MBA - not counting positions where an MBA is an official requirement. So, gaining relevant experience is key. If the position is not officially 'post-MBA only' then an MBA still is a plus, but not a huge one.

So, to answer your question, you don't necessarily need an MBA to break into consulting. Your background in computational biology and your experience in a renowned research institute and pharma company could be valuable in a consulting role. However, you would need to be prepared to explain why you're making the transition and how your skills and experience would be beneficial in a consulting context.
