MBB offer: keep interviewing to move to other country?

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle.

I've accepted an MBB offer (post-MBA) for "country A" and am super excited to start - let's call that MBB "MBB-A". However, this past week some familial matters unfolded, and it would be a lot better for me to move to "country B" so I can be near my mom (she doesn't really have anyone else and is having some health issues). I had applied to another MBB (MBB-B) for country B and am still technically scheduled to interview with them in a few weeks. I was originally planning to drop out of their interview process after accepting the other offer but now I'm not sure I should.

Frankly, I very much prefer MBB-A (for which I accepted an offer). But I feel I need to be responsible and move to country B in the near future. Waiting an extra year would be okay, but not much longer.

How difficult would it be to transfer to another office after one year if I'm a good performer at MBB-A? If it's very difficult, it might be more responsible for me to keep interviewing for MBB-B and try to get an offer for country B. But I would feel absolutely horrible about it, not only because it's unethical, but also because MBB-A has been awesome and I'd love to work there.

I'd love to hear your input and how you would handle this situation if you were in my shoes.

Note: visa issues are not a problem in my situation.

Just contact your recruiter and see if the other office can take you. No need to wait a year if it's for personal reasons and you have a genuine reason (which this definitely falls under vs. e.g. I prefer country X). Any time I've heard of these type of situations they took it well. Best of luck to your mom

I had heard that it's pretty much impossible to transfer before having done one year, since I interviewed for that specific office. It would be great if that was an option though... I might try to see if I can schedule a chat with my HR contact to talk about "how transfers work" and try to get a feel for whether transferring before my start date would be possible given my situation.

Not applicable here. That rule is designed for people who want to be smart and interview for office X because it's less competitive but never intend to actually start there.

I'd advise to do the following. Email your recruiter and explain the baseline situation, since when you were aware of the situation or material change in the situation (i.e. after you interviewed and accepted the offer), and why this change makes you believe you need to be in your home country (e.g. need to assist my mom in-person over the weekends as she cannot do her own laundry or whatever). Then just kindly ask what they can do, that you're aware of the regular 1 year period before transferring, but that you'd highly appreciate if they could look into any efforts to make an exception. Caveat the whole thing that you're conscious it's trying times with COVID and that you understand this might not be an option but appreciate any effort of exploring it. Offer a call with them to explain the situation in more detail if helpful.

Optional, but to soften the whole thing you can say you'd of course also be open to (or prefer?) temporary transfer options as you're still committed to working in country A once your family's health situation has improved.

Interviewing with another firm while you've already accepted your offer is a far more nuclear option than asking for the above
