MBB/IB Background Check

Disclaimer: I haven't done anything questionable. I'm pretty tame online tbh. Just watch TikToks and go on instagram with a comment here and there.

So few years ago, I was gifted a used phone and the sim with it by an old friend. It was great and worked really well.

However, I had forgotten that a lot of his socials were connected to my sim (his old one). But since applying to jobs I started thinking about background checks and saw people had been given an offer but had their offer revoked after background check. Naturally, I wanted to check myself out. I checked instagram and past comments (all good except maybe a few comments about the recent Qatar world cup but nothing rude (I am deleting them in case it affects me)), checked if my fake socials were linked to the email and phone number I used to apply with and it was all good. Searched my name on google and found everything I wrote on my CV on there so that was really good.

I remembered recently of a troll twitter account he made a while back and decided to search it up. He is still using it but it is private. I knew he was using it as you can search up the username and recent responses to his tweets came out. And you can see some of the comments if you type in the username on google. They are not good tweets. It's mainly him arguing with White supremacists and basically angering them by saying not so nice things to them as a response to them saying not so nice things about his race and ethnicity. Before this, we didn't really keep in contact (maybe a happy bday message here but that's it) but I decided to message him anyway an ask if the phone number is still linked to his account. He apologised because he forgot it was and removed it immediately.

As my phone number was linked, would this be an issue at all? I'm not sure how deep the background checks are and whether they really delve deep or just verify what you wrote on your CV/write your name into google. I'm not entirely worried more so it would be awkward explaining if they did find that twitter account and I imagine it will not put me in a good spotlight.

Am I worrying for no reason? Even if he deletes the tweets, it'll still be on google.

My personal experience in background checks are first and foremost, they're handled by third party organizations, not by the consulting firms themselves. These third-party organizations follow a checklist and really just aim to do the bare minimum since they have hundreds of applications to get through at any given time. They're not going to dive deep in social media as much as they are going to just google your name on each social media platform.

I would say there's a 99.9% chance this is not brought up at all, since they're more concerned about the validity of your professional experiences, verifying you have attended higher education with a letter of proof, transcript, and such. Some of these folks have ~10-20 people working on a single application and spread misinformation internally or lose documents candidates have sent since they end up buried in email inboxes. I highly doubt they would be so meticulous as to scour the web to isolate for tweets tied to a non-affiliated username and look for a link like that.

In contrast, I would imagine they may ask for offer letters, tax documents, and series of proofs of employments and consent forms in which they will promptly lose and re-request.

Ah that has made me feel a lot less worried! I wasn't planning on mentioning anything to them anyway and was just preparing for a situation where they do question me. If it does happen, although I assume it's unlikely, I'll definitely just be straight up with them and see how they take it.

But thank you! I just won't worry about this anymore and leave it be as there are more things to be worried about!

I'll just tack on that you mentioned having a conversation with your buddy, OP? Was that over text/email? AKA in writing. If so, you "have receipts" if they ever did broach the question for some reason. And if you showed them that along with a bit of backstory, I agree that I'd doubt they'd care. And if anything, in my experience we/they'd instead give you points for honesty and providing some backup (shows you actually give a crap, and take it sreriously).

Oh good idea! Yes I sent over text and have texting proof so that will work really well! Thank you so much!

Not too sure about IB, but at least for an MBB NA office (for a summer internship, but applies universally), this will definitely not be an issue. I just had my background check cleared in August 2022 (they even ran it twice since the salary increase announcement was right after the first background check, thus, revised offer letter), and the parameters they primarily focused on were verification of employment (including internships), education (school, major, GPA), and criminal background check. It does note "Social Media" under the background check report, but it usually clears within minutes, and highly doubt this will be flagged.

That's helpful to know and reassured me that everything will be fine. Thank you so much. Every social media account of mine is private so I am fine with that haha and I don't have any weird pics or anything of me on other people's social media so fine with that too! But glad to know they don't delve in deeply!
