McKinsey/BCG NJ vs NYC Office

I'm currently applying for summer 2026 internships with McKinsey and BCG. I've lived in NYC most of my life, but I know the NYC offices are extremely competitive—especially for candidates from my target school. I'm considering applying to the New Jersey offices instead.

I read that for some smaller offices, the general perception is that they’re easier to get into, but their smaller intern classes can actually make them more selective than larger offices like NYC, which host significantly more interns. Do the NJ offices follow that pattern, or are they large enough that the odds might actually be better? Should I apply to NJ for both McKinsey and BCG?

Yes overall nj offices will be a little less competitive but not by much. Keep in mind the average person there still went to a top target school so don’t expect it to be easy. I would say only apply to nj if you meet one of the following:

- your school is a target for nj specifically: meaning the nj team had made the trip to your campus to recruit

- you networked with more than 2 people from the nj office

-you’re from nj or you went to high school in nj

Otherwise they can tell you’re just applying to game the system and won’t take your application seriously

Post above sums it up well. But as an alum of an MBB NJ office, here's my take:

  1. While the NJ office may be ~slightly easier to get into, it's still the same interview process. Almost everyone in the NJ office would have been able to get an offer at the NYC office. They're all still top targets with great resumes.
  2. However, NJ office may be slightly easier if you have ties to NJ or if you're interested in the specific industries covered by that office. A lot of people in the NJ office at my firm grew up in NJ, and the office does recruit a lot at schools that are closer to NJ (UPENN was the top feeder for my office, and they did accept a few Rutgers students every year). And if you have specific interest in Pharma (or whatever industry the office serves), it will give you a leg up. But be prepared for the 'why did you apply to NJ?' question.
  3. Most people still live in NYC. The only people who lived in NJ (besides Hoboken/Jersey City) were those who were living at home to save money.  Most teams work out of the NYC office (or travel), so you don't have to worry about the commute to Summit/Newark.
