McKinseys Opportunities in China

Hello all,

Hoping you’d be able to provide some insight into these 2 questions.

I’m joining NY McKinsey soon. The goal is to work in or at least travel to China for projects.

Q1) Does anyone know if American Consultants are valuable in McKinsey overseas, in terms of would overseas offices be willing to sponsor a full time role?

Q2) I know US McKinsey has domestic trips, potentially some to Europe, but does anyone know about teams that travel to Asia? (China Taiwan HK)

Thank you, it would be a huge help if someone may be able to opine.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights related to your questions:

Q1) Value of American Consultants in McKinsey Overseas

  • Team Composition and Local Dynamics: In China/HK, the team composition and local dynamics are crucial. Teams in these regions often have a strong local presence, which can impact the working environment and culture. However, American consultants can still be valuable, especially if they bring unique skills or perspectives that complement the local team.
  • Sponsorship for Full-Time Roles: While the context does not provide specific details about McKinsey's policies, it is common for global firms to sponsor valuable talent for overseas roles. The willingness to sponsor may depend on the consultant's expertise, the demand for their skills in the local market, and the strategic needs of the firm.

Q2) US McKinsey Teams Traveling to Asia

  • Exposure to Asian Markets: Working in Hong Kong, for example, offers exposure to various markets in the region, including Korea, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, India, and even Australia. This suggests that there are opportunities for consultants to travel within Asia for projects.
  • Cross-Border Deals and Projects: For PE funds and other financial services, cross-border activities are common. This indicates that there might be opportunities for consultants to engage in projects that require travel to Asia, including China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

Additional Considerations

  • Cultural Adaptation: Understanding the local business culture is essential. For instance, mainland Chinese bankers focus heavily on principles and personal relationships, which might differ from the more process-oriented approach in the US.
  • Market Dynamics: The Asian market, particularly in finance, is dynamic and fast-growing. This can provide a rich environment for consultants looking to gain diverse experiences.

If you need more specific information or personal experiences, you might want to check out related threads on Wall Street Oasis or reach out to current or former McKinsey consultants who have worked in Asia.

It’s one firm so no barrier per se but language is critical. Know the right partners or CSTs (not sure if they call that anymore) active in Asia. I remember there was a guy from one of the CA or NY offices at the BA level staffed in GC but I think he knew the partner from before. BTW Japan office might be easier as lately (albeit pre-covid) there have been many foreigners based there (European/ Caucasian, below the partner level).
