Not Good GMAT, doomed in strategy consulting ?

Hi,

If my scores in GMAT are not in line with traditional candidates (MBB candidates generally are in the 700 - 750 range i believe), whereas my score is only 640,

Does this mean, if i do go down this career path of strategy consulting at one of the top 5 firms - i wont be able to perform to the caliber of my colleagues if i manage to get into management consulting in one of top 5 (MBB or AT Kearney or Monitor for example...) or i have to work DOUBLE as hard to perhaps get the same results as some of my colleagues in Management consulting ?

Did you study a bunch for the GMAT?

Here's how I see it:

1) You didn't study as much, but you're just as smart in the areas it tests. You're fine. 2) You studied a bunch, and you're just not as smart in the areas it tests. However, you have great ability in other areas. You're fine. 3) Option two, except you're not smart in other areas, either. Frankly, I think this is unlikely. I think all people tend to have some things we're they're more able or they have a little extra something. However, in the case that you somehow got the short straw genetically, you might have to work harder. You'll still get paid, get the great experiences/education, and the prestige of the position. You're fine.

Worry about how the test scores will impact your admissions chances or your recruiting chances. Don't worry about if they're indicative of an inability to perform.

I'd be more worried that firms black ball you up front due to the GMAT. If you're in the 10-20 MBA school range this is a huge concern; my understanding from friends in those programs is that the big 3 firms won't talk to you below a certain range (somewhere around 720-740ish). In the M7 world you'll definitely have the opportunity to network regardless of your score but it will absolutely factor into their decision to develop their closed interview lists. You won't know until then if it's going to keep you from an interview.

Also, 640 is really low. I would agree with the advice to retake if you're targeting top 5 consulting firms.
