Q&A - Industry and Management Consulting (Big4, MBB, Tier2)

Hi All,

I recently joined as a mentor on the platform. I have 15 years of professional experience across industry, leading strategy houses (MBB/Tier 2) and am currently a Partner at a Big 4 firm. Sector focus on oil and gas, industrials and manufacturing. I have been on the recruiting side, conducting real interviews from Associate through Manager level.

Happy to take questions and share insights from the other side of the table on what actually moves the needle in interviews, how candidates are evaluated, sector-specific recruiting, transitioning into consulting from non-traditional backgrounds, and life inside the firms once you are in.

Drop your questions below. I will try to answer as best as possible.

Best Regards

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key insights and tips that could align with your expertise and the questions you might receive:

  1. What Moves the Needle in Interviews?

    • Case Interviews: Success in case interviews often hinges on creativity, structured thinking, and adaptability. Avoid over-relying on pre-learned frameworks; instead, focus on tailoring your approach to the specific problem at hand.
    • Behavioral Interviews: These are equally weighted with case interviews. Engaging with your interviewer, demonstrating problem-solving skills, and showcasing personal stories of overcoming challenges can leave a strong impression.
  2. How Candidates Are Evaluated:

    • Firms assess candidates across multiple touchpoints, including networking events, mock interviews, and even informal interactions like dinners or happy hours. Every interaction is a data point.
    • Highlighting achievements, career progression, and the impact of your work is crucial. Faster-than-average career growth or significant results in past roles can set you apart.
  3. Sector-Specific Recruiting:

    • For sectors like oil and gas, industrials, and manufacturing, candidates with a deep understanding of industry-specific challenges and trends will stand out. Tailoring your case solutions or behavioral examples to these sectors can demonstrate your relevance.
  4. Transitioning from Non-Traditional Backgrounds:

    • Candidates from non-traditional backgrounds should focus on transferable skills, such as analytical thinking, problem-solving, and leadership. Networking and storytelling are key to bridging the gap and showing how your unique experiences add value.
  5. Life Inside the Firms:

    • Consulting life involves a mix of challenges and rewards. While travel and long hours are common, the exposure to senior clients and diverse projects can be highly fulfilling. Building strong relationships within the firm and maintaining a growth mindset are essential for success.

How is GPA evaluated for resume screenings and getting a first-round interview? (For example, a 3.4 as an Industrial Engineering major) with strong work experience

Is consulting the right path if my primary interest is advising governments (using big data) on economic policy, industrial policy, and skill development? If yes, how can I position myself for public sector advisory projects at MBB / Big 4 / Tier 2 firms, and how much would AI/ML literacy help? Thanks so much :)
