Recruiting for consulting very poorly - need help!

Hi everyone, first time posting on here, but I am in dire straights. Sophomore here at a semi-target school. Currently have been "recruiting" for consulting for a couple months now but I have no idea what I'm doing and I already see myself falling behind. I've had a decent amount of chats at Deloitte and FTI, but I really don't know how I'm supposed to be going about this. I'm confused about casing and I don't see what everyone else is doing that I'm not. Am I cooked already? Is it too late? I really need help because it seems like all of my friends are getting jobs left and right.

You're not cooked, and it's definitely not too late! Consulting recruiting can feel overwhelming, especially if you're just starting out and comparing yourself to others. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you get back on track:

1. Networking

  • Start building relationships: Networking is crucial in consulting recruiting. Reach out to alumni, current consultants, or anyone in your network who works at firms you're interested in. Use LinkedIn or your school's alumni database to find connections.
  • Ask insightful questions: When networking, focus on learning about their experiences, the firm's culture, and what they look for in candidates. This will help you craft your "why consulting" and "why this firm" story.
  • Follow up: After each conversation, send a thank-you email and ask if they can connect you with someone else in the firm. This keeps the momentum going.

2. Case Interview Prep

  • Start with the basics: If you're new to casing, start with resources like Case in Point by Marc Cosentino or Case Interview Secrets by Victor Cheng. These will give you a solid foundation.
  • Practice regularly: Find a case partner (classmates, friends, or online communities) and practice cases together. Aim for at least 2-3 cases per week to build your skills.
  • Use online resources: Websites like PrepLounge, CaseCoach, or even YouTube have free case interview examples and tips.
  • Focus on structure: Case interviews are all about structured thinking. Practice breaking down problems into clear, logical steps.

3. Behavioral Interview Prep

  • Craft your story: Consulting firms care about your personal story. Spend time reflecting on your experiences and achievements. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers.
  • Prepare for common questions: Be ready to answer questions like "Why consulting?", "Why this firm?", and "Tell me about a time you worked in a team."
  • Practice storytelling: Your answers should be concise, engaging, and tailored to the firm you're interviewing with.

4. Leverage Your School's Resources

  • Career services: Many semi-target schools have consulting-specific resources, like case workshops or alumni panels. Take advantage of these.
  • Case competitions: Participate in consulting case competitions. These are great for building skills and networking with firms.
  • Clubs and organizations: Join consulting or business clubs on campus. They often have resources, events, and connections to firms.

5. Stay Organized

  • Track your progress: Create a spreadsheet to track your networking efforts, applications, and interview prep. This will help you stay on top of deadlines and follow-ups.
  • Set goals: Break your recruiting efforts into manageable tasks (e.g., "Reach out to 5 people this week," "Practice 3 cases by Friday").

6. Mindset

  • Don't compare yourself to others: Everyone's journey is different. Focus on your own progress and what you can control.
  • Be persistent: Consulting recruiting is competitive, but persistence pays off. Keep networking, practicing, and applying.
  • Learn from setbacks: If something doesn't go well, reflect on what you can improve and keep moving forward.

7. Additional Tips

  • Start small: If MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) feels out of reach right now, focus on firms like Deloitte, FTI, or other boutique consulting firms. These can be great stepping stones.
  • Seek mentorship: Find a mentor who has been through the process. They can provide guidance, feedback, and encouragement.
  • Use online forums: Communities like Wall Street Oasis or Reddit's consulting threads can be helpful for advice and finding case partners.

You're still early in your journey, and there's plenty of time to catch up. Focus on consistent effort, and you'll see progress. Good luck!

Hi there,

You are not cooked. You are a sophomore, you have time. Your actual recruiting window for full internships is next year.

Focus on three things right now. First, keep doing coffee chats but be more deliberate, ask about the work, the firm culture and how they prepped, not just generic questions. Second, start serious case prep now. Read Case in Point to understand what cases are about, then build structuring and math fundamentals before doing full cases. Third, look into junior programs and diversity programs that firms run for sophomores, those are the realistic targets for this year and they often convert into junior internships.

Stop comparing yourself to friends, you do not know what they are actually getting and the timeline is longer than it feels right now.

I have worked for top strategy houses. Please feel free to reach out if you want to craft a targeted strategy to support with the process. Feel free to setup 1-1 mentorship sessions. Good luck and Hope its useful !
