Renegotiating starting offer
I received an offer before graduation from a consulting firm and took it before realizing how far back I would be delayed (graduated '24, job start is hopefully mid-late '25.) I've now heard that some people are re-negotiating their offers after numerous have reneged. I have leverage with my current employment but am aware enough to know that established consulting firms won't budge on entry-level salary so I'm wondering where in my offer there is room for re-negotiation/if this is a dumb thing to try? Kind of a niche question but if anyone has been in this situation or has guidance it would be appreciated.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, renegotiating an entry-level consulting offer can be tricky, especially with established firms that are known to hold firm on base salaries for new hires. However, there are areas in your offer where you might have room to negotiate without directly challenging the base salary. Here are some potential angles:
Relocation Assistance: If you're moving for the role, you could request additional support for relocation expenses or a higher relocation stipend.
Start Date Flexibility: Given the delay in your start date, you could negotiate for a more favorable timeline or even a signing bonus to compensate for the extended wait.
Signing Bonus: If the firm is facing reneges, they might be more open to offering a one-time signing bonus to secure your commitment.
Professional Development Budget: You could ask for additional funding for certifications, courses, or other professional development opportunities during the waiting period.
Benefits Customization: Explore if there’s flexibility in benefits, such as increased PTO, wellness stipends, or other perks.
Role-Specific Adjustments: If you have leverage from your current employment, you could position yourself for a slightly elevated role or responsibilities, which might come with better compensation.
While these are reasonable areas to explore, keep in mind that consulting firms often have structured offers for entry-level roles, and pushing too hard could risk your standing. Approach the conversation professionally, emphasizing your enthusiasm for the role while highlighting the value you bring and the challenges posed by the delay.

If you try to renegotiate and they pull the offer, will you be screwed?
No, but I would very much prefer this job.
Well then, you literally already have it. Leave well enough alone.
Sounds like you want to negotiate just to negotiate (since youre asking what things you should be asking for), waste of time in my opinion.
I don't see it as a waste of time to ask. If there's an opportunity to put myself in a better position contractually I would be stupid not to pursue it. Given the information I've received, I'm aware others are exploring this path and I'm just wondering if anyone has clarification on the details of an entry-level offer that are negotiable.
