Soon to be MPP Graduate Looking to Jump into Consulting
Hey guys, I'm new to WSO and look forward to chatting with you all. I am a 2nd year MPP student in a top 5 public policy program and I'm looking to get into consulting. I have done basic research about the case interview process and I have an inside connect at a big firm but I still have a few questions:
- What resources should I be looking at to prepare for cases?
- Since my MPP is a professional degree and I have about 2 years work experience (including internships) where would I place in terms of job title?
- What should I expect in the way of compensation?
- What should I be looking out for in the case interviews?
Sorry for all the questions! Thanks and look forward to hear from you all soon!
You clearly haven't done enough "basic research"...
Skim Case in Point to get a sense of what goes on in a case interview. Then people use Victor Cheng's book/videos/website, David Orvhall's Crack the Case, and business school case books to prep. You'll only get better by actually doing them. Do some research and figure out what works best for you.
This is firm-dependent. But most MPP candidates come in where undergrads and other master's students come in. Depending on the length and quality of your work experience, you might be credited with 1 year of tenure. (Not very likely if you only have 1.5 years of experience before you started your program.)
In line with people at your level. Again, basic research will give you the answer you need.
This is an extremely broad question with a million possible answers. You need to narrow it down a little more if you want helpful answers.
Thanks for your comment. This was all very helpful.
I worded my last question awkwardly. What I meant to ask was what are a few common errors that people make if they are new to case interviews?
I'd start with either case in point or crack the case, I preferred the latter. You should do a bunch of cases out of the book, then look for a case partner. Start drilling the two primary sorts of cases, market sizing and business cases.
Thanks!
