T2 Consulting vs MBB interviews?

Hey guys, I'm considering a lateral after my 2nd year (coming up in a few months) to consulting from IB. Wondering how different in difficulty and content an interview at an Oliver Wyman or LEK vs MBB would be? My school was an MBB feeder but honestly open to T2 for WLB purposes and for sake of breaking in. Thank you!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know about T2 consulting vs. MBB interviews:

  1. Difficulty and Content:

    • MBB interviews are generally considered more competitive and challenging. They often have lower acceptance rates and require a higher level of preparation, particularly for case interviews. For example, McKinsey's PEI (Personal Experience Interview) is known for its rigor, where you answer one behavioral question for 15 minutes and are grilled on every decision you made in your story.
    • T2 firms like Oliver Wyman or LEK also have case interviews, but they may not be as intense or structured as MBB. The quality of candidates and the interview process at T2 firms are still high, but the bar for entry is slightly lower compared to MBB.
  2. Key Differences:

    • Case Interviews: Both MBB and T2 firms use case interviews, but MBB’s cases are often more complex and require a deeper understanding of business strategy and problem-solving.
    • Behavioral Interviews: MBB places a heavier emphasis on behavioral interviews, with a focus on leadership, impact, and problem-solving stories. T2 firms also assess these traits but may not probe as deeply.
    • Preparation: MBB often provides resources to help candidates prepare for interviews, which can be an advantage if you’re targeting these firms.
  3. Work-Life Balance (WLB):

    • If WLB is a priority, T2 firms might be a better fit. While MBB is known for its prestige and exit opportunities, the workload can be intense. T2 firms like Oliver Wyman or LEK may offer slightly better WLB while still providing strong career development opportunities.
  4. Breaking In:

    • Coming from an IB background, you already have a strong analytical skill set, which is highly valued in consulting. If your school is an MBB feeder, you might have a better shot at MBB, but T2 firms are also excellent options, especially if you’re looking for a balance between career growth and lifestyle.

In summary, MBB interviews are tougher and more competitive, but T2 firms still maintain high standards. If you’re open to T2 for WLB and breaking into consulting, it’s a solid choice. Just tailor your preparation to the specific firm’s interview style and focus on acing both case and behavioral components. Good luck!

Difficulty of cases is roughly the same, the difference comes down to the standard they expect of you. You should just prep for MBB and T2 interviews in the same way to be honest.

To add: definitely good to be open to T2 and not just MB but I wouldn't expect the WLB to be any better.
