Transfer Advice for Cornell
Hey, guys, I would love to hear your opinions on potentially transferring. My interests align more with consulting right now but finance definitely still interest me.
At my current school, I have finished with a 4.00 GPA so far and overall I expect I can keep above a 3.9 with not too much trouble.
At Cornell, I will be majoring in Economics and will be able to dual major or add minors very easily. I have heard of the competitive nature of Cornell's clubs and the grade deflation that exists. I am a pretty competitive person and believe I can still keep above a 3.7 at Cornell and get into both consulting and finance clubs, but do not know how competitive the top ones are.
I know that finance recruitment at Cornell is very good but do consulting firms also recruit pretty heavily on campus? Are Arts and Sciences students at a disadvantage compared to AEM, the Dyson School? Outside of consulting and finance how is overall recruiting? I would also love to hear people's experiences with Cornell's classes and competitiveness revolving around their clubs. Essentially, my main concern comes down to if Cornell's opportunities outweigh being able to stand out pretty easily at my current school.
Thank you for your insight I truly appreciate it.
Do finance/consulting clubs have admissions at Cornell?
Yeah the clubs have an application process. They range from 2% acceptance for the apparent top clubs to around 15% for lower tier ones. I'm sure there are other clubs though that do not have applications.
.
I had just talked to someone at Cornell and that's how he described them. I think in terms of the finance clubs the upper ones have more money to invest with. The upper consulting clubs may place better or work with better companies.
You should considering transferring if $$$ isn't an issue. About 60% of Cornell Econ majors go into finance/banking/consulting and every year students are easily sent to MBB and BB. Cornell Econ and AEM job placements are roughly the same according to our career services office. If you view the list of firms that 2017 econ and AEM majors went into, they are roughly the same but with some more prestigious firms popping up on the econ list.
Grade deflation is real and it hurts but if you can do a 4.0 somewhere u can manage a 3.7 here. As for clubs, it's all really about how social and extroverted you are to be honest because the top clubs here you get in by networking well and making a great impression. Good luck!
Thanks for your insight, I did choose to transfer. Is the list you are referring to the one one Cornell's Economics major page or a different more complete one?

Is what I used. Notice the list says "some of" so I'm assuming this is just bigger names. Glad to hear you coming in the fall!
Are placement record between AEM and Econ truly the same? My data showed econ has fewer IB placements with same(200+) amount of student.
Bain and BCG didn't come to on campus recruiting last fall but I do know people who got in through online recruiting
Do you know if that was an online resume drop through Cornell career services where students essentially benefited from OCR or if it was just the normal online recruiting their website?
I mean they didn't post jobs on Cornell's handshake, didn't have anyone come to campus for any events and obviously didn't have first round on-campus interview. McKinsey did though, and big 4 and a small amount of other tier 2.
If you can afford Cornell and get in, go for it. Also consider Notre Dame and UVA, which are pretty transfer friendly.
