UT Business Honors? vs Yale Econ

Hi. Wondering between the two what is the more rationale decision for my brother. Same cost for both. End goal is either NYC or Austin consulting. I currently go to the cornell hotel school but had the opportunity to go to UT earlier - just want some more insights into the dilemma. Thank you.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's a breakdown to help your brother decide between UT Austin Business Honors (BHP) and Yale Economics:

UT Austin Business Honors (BHP):

  • Strengths in Consulting: UT BHP has a strong reputation in Texas and is well-connected to consulting firms in Austin and the broader Texas region. If your brother is leaning towards Austin consulting, UT BHP offers a direct pipeline.
  • Smaller Program Size: The BHP program is highly selective, with only about 130 students per class, providing a tight-knit community and personalized attention.
  • Recruiting Opportunities: While UT BHP does place students in NYC, the majority of its recruiting strength lies in Texas. Only about 10% of UT Austin graduates head to NYC, so the focus is more regional.
  • Cost and ROI: If the cost is the same, UT BHP offers a strong ROI, especially for consulting roles in Texas.

Yale Economics:

  • Prestige and Brand: Yale carries a global brand name that resonates across industries, including consulting. It opens doors to elite consulting firms in NYC and beyond.
  • Broader Career Flexibility: A Yale degree is versatile and valuable if your brother decides to pivot away from consulting in the future.
  • NYC Placement: Yale has a strong track record of placing students in NYC consulting roles, including at top-tier firms like McKinsey, Bain, and BCG.
  • Alumni Network: Yale’s alumni network is extensive and influential, particularly in finance and consulting.

Key Considerations:

  1. Location Preference: If your brother is set on Austin consulting, UT BHP might be the better fit. For NYC consulting, Yale has the edge.
  2. Long-Term Goals: Yale’s degree might offer more flexibility and prestige for career shifts or graduate school down the line.
  3. Cultural Fit: UT BHP offers a smaller, more intimate program, while Yale provides a broader liberal arts experience.

Recommendation:

If your brother is confident about staying in Texas and pursuing consulting in Austin, UT BHP is a strong choice. However, if he’s aiming for NYC consulting or values the prestige and flexibility of a globally recognized degree, Yale Economics would be the more strategic option.
