What are my chances of getting into MBB or Tier 2 consultancies?

Hi everyone,

Wanted to ask for people's opinion, especially those already in consulting.

I am currently 23, with decent A-Levels (ABB) in Economics, Maths and Physics, a 2.1 BSc from the University of Nottingham and just finished my masters degree getting a Distinction in MSc from King's College London. I have some internship experience in equity research at a small boutique, and as a leading equity analyst at my university's investment fund.

I have managed to land an analyst role right after finishing my masters degree at a less known consulting firm focused solely on the financial services industry, which I am excited about given the tough labour market at the moment. However, my ultimate goal is to try end up at one of the MBB or the big 4 strategy consultancies, once I pick up about a year's worth of experience at the current job.

I wanted to ask for people's opinions on whether or not, based on this background, I would even have a chance at landing a job in one of these top consultancies (having decent A-Levels, BSc and MSc from respectable universities and some relevant experience). Or am I just dreaming?

Don't roast me, just give me your thoughts, some advice would be super appreciated.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding your chances of getting into MBB or Tier 2 consultancies:

Background and Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • A-Levels: ABB in Economics, Maths, and Physics.
    • BSc: 2.1 from the University of Nottingham.
    • MSc: Distinction from King's College London.
  • Experience:
    • Internships: Equity research at a small boutique, leading equity analyst at university's investment fund.
    • Current Role: Analyst at Curinos, a consulting firm focused on financial services.

Insights from WSO Content:

  1. Educational Background:

    • Your academic background is solid, with degrees from reputable universities. This is a positive factor as MBB and Tier 2 firms often recruit from top schools.
  2. Internship and Work Experience:

    • Having relevant internship experience in equity research and a leadership role in your university's investment fund is beneficial.
    • Your current role at Curinos, although at a less known firm, provides you with industry-specific experience which can be valuable.
  3. Transition to MBB or Tier 2:

    • MBB: The transition to MBB can be challenging but not impossible. MBB firms have a rigorous selection process and often prefer candidates with experience from top-tier firms or exceptional academic and professional achievements.
    • Tier 2: Transitioning to Tier 2 consultancies (e.g., Deloitte, Strategy&, LEK) might be more attainable. These firms also value strong academic backgrounds and relevant experience, and they might be more flexible in their hiring criteria compared to MBB.

Advice:

  • Networking: Leverage your network to connect with current consultants at MBB and Tier 2 firms. Informational interviews can provide insights and potentially lead to referrals.
  • Skill Development: Focus on developing consulting-specific skills such as problem-solving, communication, and analytical abilities. Consider taking relevant courses or certifications if needed.
  • Application Strategy: Tailor your applications to highlight your academic achievements, relevant experience, and any unique skills or insights you bring to the table. Emphasize your industry-specific knowledge gained at Curinos.

Conclusion:

While breaking into MBB might be more challenging, your background gives you a reasonable chance at Tier 2 consultancies. With strategic networking, skill development, and a well-crafted application, you can improve your chances of landing a role at these top firms.
