When did you find out about the Management Consulting industry?
According to my profile I've been a member of WSO for 29 weeks and therefore have known about Management Consulting for 28 weeks... lol. Fortunately I've been productive thus far in my life and my experiences are applicable to my MC hunt.
But I'm curious, how some you all found out about MCing? And if you feel like sharing why you want to do it?
Follow-up question... How often are forced to explain to people who don't know what it is, what exactly it is?
*** ie. Despite my dad running a small business for the last 25 years he didn't know what it was. I was cracking up last summer when I told him that I wanted to MC. He was like "Consult, you? What they hell are you going to consult on? How to pick up girls in the club? Pssh... they don't pay 23 year olds $80K to do that."
Then I sat his ass down in front of the firms' websites lol***
I was a week into my internship at a strat shop. No joke. Had the "ah-ha!" moment and finally realized why I was hearing all these new sayings such as: kaizen, implement, data dump and latest and greatest
lol, I know this will probably raise more questions than answers but yeah, that was my introduction to MC
^ how did you get through case interviews without a clue of what MC is? As for the question, most people don't know what management consulting is when I tell them. However when I tell them I work for a firm that does the same thing as McKinsey they all say they've heard of it and pretend to know what consulting is. Don't base your opinion on these people's knowledge. They respect and understand more about accountants.
About 5 minutes before finding out what IB was. And that was that.
I was trying to find out what I could with an econ degree other than academia and finance.
Don't remember exactly when I found out, but I'm happy that I learned about it early on. I say we're really lucky that we already know what MC is. Some guys are 5 years into their career's and then find out about MC and realize it's something they're interested in. This is why I'm kind of obsessed with finding out as much as I can about all different careers, because I don't want to be 5 years in and then find out there is a much better way.
Fall semester of the year I graduated. Had my offer by early November.

The day before my McK Summer Internship Interview. i applied having no idea what the company did but rmb some friends working there the year before and said it's a good brand to have on your resume. I had a few interviews for IB internships the days leading up to this and completely forgot i applied to it until the day before the interview. Went into the interview having barely any idea what management consulting is and how top notch the company is.
Turned out to be the longest interview i've ever had! After the interview i decided to do some more research so see why there were being such tough asses, then i realized they are pretty much #1 in the business and a career there is comparable to elites in IB.
Somehow i got the offer and after a summer there i fell in love with consulting.
Found out about management consulting here on WSO about 6 months ago. I'm currently a senior. Didn't look into it much at first, but have been digging deeper lately and I am becoming intrigued. As an ambitious problem solving type (I'm an engineering student) and someone that really enjoys working with other people, I think this type of position might be a good fit for me. Problem is I graduate in a couple months and have an engineering job lined up... so am I any better off than someone who discovers this field 5 years into their career??
I was a sophomore in college, studying abroad, and was intrigued by a class they were offering where i studied abroad. Called "Management Consulting" so i took the class. it was taught by a retired BCG partner (or something, i forget what exactly was his title). and the rest was history.
I can honestly say that nobody knows what I do. my roomate can't believe that i travel 4 days of the week and repeatedly doubts i even work. my parents say "he does something in finance". my gf has no clue.
