Yale vs Duke
Yale is cheaper by 5k per year, but Duke seems way more my speed in terms of school spirit. I am interested in potentially consulting or broad PM work. I only have a few more days for my decision, unfortunately. Also, I have heard club recruiting out of Yale is a bit more difficult with a smaller number of clubs available overall. I would be doing Yale Econ and Cognitive Science vs Duke Econ and Psychology. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key considerations for your decision:
Cost Difference: Yale being $5k cheaper per year is a notable factor, especially if finances are a concern. Over four years, this adds up to $20k, which could be significant depending on your financial situation.
School Spirit and Fit: If Duke's school spirit and overall vibe resonate more with you, this could greatly impact your college experience. Feeling at home and enjoying your time at college is crucial, as it can influence your overall happiness and success.
Recruiting and Clubs: Yale has been noted for its strong alumni network and prestige, which can be advantageous for consulting and PM roles. However, as you mentioned, club recruiting at Yale might be more competitive due to fewer clubs. Duke, on the other hand, may offer a broader range of clubs and opportunities, which could align better with your interests and goals.
Academics: Both Yale and Duke are excellent schools, and the difference in majors (Yale Econ and Cognitive Science vs. Duke Econ and Psychology) might not significantly impact your career prospects in consulting or PM. However, consider which combination excites you more academically.
Career Placement: Both schools are strong feeders into consulting and PM roles. Yale's prestige and alumni network are often highlighted, while Duke's strong presence in consulting recruiting and its vibrant campus culture are also significant advantages.
Ultimately, this decision comes down to personal fit. If Duke's environment feels more aligned with your personality and goals, and you believe the additional cost is worth it, it could be the better choice. However, if the financial savings and Yale's prestige hold more weight for you, Yale is an excellent option. Both paths can lead to success in consulting or PM with the right effort and networking.

I went to Duke - go to Yale
Can you elaborate on why? Or pm more about your experience?
Yale is a better brand name - it has more "cache". I'm sure there are more unique opportunities at Yale, although at both schools every opportunity is open. It's also cheaper why would you pay more to go to an objectively worse school?
Duke is great, there's a vibrant social scene - especially in Greek Life. The social scene can be quite limited if you're a dude that's not in greek life. Dude people don't care about school spirit that much in the grand scheme of things it dosen't really matter. Yes duke has much better school spirit due to the athletics program. But after you graduate that dosen't come with you.
any other duke alums want to chime in? PM me if you want to talk more.
That's interesting. i've heard that the lack of school spirit at yale leads to less receptive alumni. but thanks!

I have no dog in this fight, but I think you should listen to your gut on this one. Yale is probably a bit more prestigious and you're in a bit of an odd situation where the more "prestigious" school is also cheaper. That said, the difference isn't insurmountable and Duke is still a very highly regarded school.
I completely disagree with the users who say school spirit doesn't matter, btw. I went to a rival school of Duke and I'll always try to help a student out because I have a lot of fond memories watching college basketball. To this day, I have an instant connection with anyone that went to my school (hell, even some Dukies) by bullshitting with them about college basketball.
Most of your success in your career will come down to you at the end of the day. Your school, first job, etc. should just ideally not be "bad" enough to not close doors, which neither school will do (outside of maybe a few hyper selective firms). From your comments, you seem like you'd clearly be happier at Duke, so I'd trust your gut. Being in an environment where you'll be happy can also affect your ability to network/connect with the student body.
This goes against the ethos of WSO, but (assuming the financial difference isn't significant for you/your family) I'd argue making the most of your undergrad experience and making life long friends by virtue of being in an environment that makes you happy will be much more fulfilling than whatever incremental prestige Yale offers. Work hard, stay humble, and keep learning. There's more to life than optimizing your chances at a job that'll have you cranking for 80+ hours a week in Excel/PPT.
Thankc you for such candid advice. I think duke may just be the move, especially since I can just see myself being much happier there.
Yale kids are the best. Go to Yale
