Being anxious about upcoming promotion

I am currently an Associate in Corp Dev and I've been aiming to get promoted ever since I joined my current role, which was 16 months ago. I like my bosses and they like me too. 8 months ago I broached the idea of promotion with my boss and he told me that I was certainly worthy of being promoted to Manager and that they'd promote me as soon as a spot opened up. One month ago, one of the managers in the team got fired, and so a spot opened up. A couple of weeks ago my boss told me that he was very confident I would be getting promoted towards end of March. He said that I continously exceeded expectations and was a go-getter. Last week he told me that my promotion had been approved by HR and that it'd be effective of 01st April. I like my boss and he likes me too...this promotion is important to me for personal (I have a chip on my shoulder from what I had to go through prior to joining my current role) and money

Oddly, I've been feeling anxious unless I get the actual promo letter or some official correspondence in writing.

April 01st is a few weeks away, so I'll be out of my misery soon.

I was just curious if anyone's promotion has been revoked last minute....

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's not uncommon for individuals to feel anxious about promotions, especially when waiting for official confirmation. Your situation, where you've been verbally assured of a promotion but are waiting for the formal letter, is a scenario that many can relate to. The anxiety stems from the uncertainty and the high stakes involved, both personally and professionally.

Regarding promotions being revoked last minute, while it's not a common occurrence, it has happened in some cases. These situations can arise due to various reasons such as sudden changes in company direction, financial constraints, or even internal politics. However, given that your boss has confirmed that your promotion has been approved by HR and has provided a specific effective date, it seems like you are on solid ground.

To manage your anxiety during this waiting period, consider the following tips, which are often discussed in the context of career advancement and workplace dynamics:

  1. Keep Performing: Continue to excel in your current role. Showing that you're still committed and delivering high-quality work can only strengthen your case for promotion.

  2. Open Communication: Maintain open lines of communication with your boss. Express your appreciation for the opportunity and, if necessary, gently inquire about the status of the official promotion letter as the date approaches.

  3. Prepare for the Role: Start preparing for your new role as a Manager. This could involve researching best practices, seeking advice from mentors, or even starting to think about your goals and objectives once promoted.

  4. Manage Anxiety: Engage in activities that help reduce anxiety, such as exercise, meditation, or speaking with a mentor or coach. Focusing on what you can control, rather than the outcome, can be beneficial.

  5. Network Internally: Continue to build your internal network. Having strong relationships across the company can provide additional support and insight into the promotion process.

Remember, while waiting for official confirmation can be nerve-wracking, focusing on your performance and preparing for the next step in your career can help alleviate some of that anxiety. Based on the information you've provided, it sounds like you're well-regarded by your boss and have made a strong case for your promotion.

You could ask your boss if there is anything you can do HR/admin related leading up to April 1? May signal to them to follow-up to HR. I'd expect a couple weeks ahead of the effective date to receive some sort of communication from HR with updated title, pay, etc.

Similar situation when I was in Big 4 audit our manager left, I was told I'd be early promoted to manager by the partner. Felt on edge until the partner gave me a heads up on comp, then a week or so after that I received communications from HR, then a week leading up to the effective date I saw updates in Workday.

Thanks man. Given the communication I have received, do you think I'm being unnecessarily anxious ?

It's common to feel anxious leading up to promotions, even with good reviews and feedback. Industry also has the added stress of no set promotion cycle/timeline. I would just task your boss if there's anything you can do admin wise leading up to April 1, will hopefully show you're being proactive. Maybe first you can also try clicking around in your HR system and see if there's any notifications or changes or anything that could show the process has started.
