At my school anyway, they aren't posted in a traditional sense. I got mine through an unusual route (study abroad research through the German department, since I speak German). A lot of freshman internships either happen that way, or through networking/connections.

I would say though, to just look at the smaller firms out there. For example, I interviewed at a 6 person boutique IB last week (2 managing partners, 1 MD, 2 analysts, and an office administrator). To be clear: one of the managing partners was an alum from my school. But if you called up their office line, let them know that you found them online and are interested in the specific type of work they do, and asked for 10 minutes to talk, I almost guarantee they would be willing to speak with you.

Where you develop it from there (as far as impressing them, showing work ethic/knowledge, being willing to work for free or close to it, and making them want you) is fully up to you.

Go for it though. Here's a list with some small firms to get you started: http://equity-research.com/list-of-top-200-investment-banks-and-boutiqu…

Go even smaller than that though. Some boutiques on that list have offices all over the world. If you get small enough, eventually someone will take you on (and you can learn) and you can add value for them.

Best of luck!
