How to get an internship at Google / Microsoft / Apple / Facebook / ect...

Hey guys,

Looking to get a sophomore internship at one of these aforementioned places for financial analyst intern roles or any other relevant business role. Target school, prior boutique tech IB experience, currently at a 3.8 GPA and hoping to keep this up by the time recruiting comes around.

My question is, how do you approach getting an internship at these tech firms? Is it the same approach as getting a finance internship (networking and OCR)? Do you simply apply on the website and hope to hear back? Bit confused right now.

Thanks in advance guys.

As a sophomore I'm not sure. I think your best chance will be networking/attending recruiting events and finaggling your way in somewhere. Most programs at those companies I believe look for junior status or URMs for anything earlier. Could be wrong, not really sure on this one.

1.) If you tell me that you're hoping to get an internship at one of those places so that you can leverage the experience for Junior Year IB recruiting, I'mma cut you.

2.) "Google / Microsoft / Apple / Facebook" are totally not on the same tier. This is perhaps the equivalent of saying "Goldman Sachs/BAML/Morgan Stanley/Barclays" (respectively).

Can you clarify then? I know Corp Dev is typically post-IB/PE/whatever, not suitable for anyone in college. But there are other roles for undergrads, yes? Which ones are open to undergrads and do you know if they hire earlier than junior year?

lol if you think Google = GS, Apple = MS and FB = Barclays. I don't think you can 'rank tech companies' like you can rank banks (the first fundamental difference between tech and banking). Working at Google vs FB vs Twitter vs LinkedIn etc makes a marginal difference from what I've seen within the tech world - what you actually produce matters more.

For OP - apply online? Network? It's not that difficult to find internship postings...

Side note: easier to move around in tech if you interned in tech before. Same situation with banking. Crossing between the two is much more difficult (speaking from experience here). The banking --> tech path has less resistance. Why? Good luck convincing a banker you are interested in banking having gone to Google/FB/etc. Given you already interned in banking, doing banking --> Google/FB/MS etc --> banking wouldn't make sense imo. You either do banking --> banking --> tech later on or banking --> tech --> tech.

It was sarcasm. Hard to pick up on dry humor online.

Thanks for your opinion. What if I want to aim for tech (and only tech) BB groups, will bankers still view a tech internship negatively? And what about doing part-time early-stage tech startups? Is that viewed negatively too?

You seem to have a lot going for you. In my experience of interviewing at a few of those places (not internships mind you, but I think they still look for the same thing), they really like an out-of-the-box candidate. Someone who has some really interesting extracurricular activities along with high grades and target school (you've shown 2/3). Show through your resume, cover letter, or through networking that you are not a run of the mill smart target nerd, and I think you should be fine.

Caveat, I think this more applies for a junior year internship, not sure about sophomore. And did you have a tech banking internship your freshman year??

haha 'run of the mill smart target nerd'. Nice one and 100% true.

OP - serious word of advice - target/non-target etc matters less in tech then banking. What you bring to the table/team and passion matters much much more vs high grades/sucking up/doing things for a brand name on your CV (trust me they can weed you out).
