Strategic finance exits?
Currently a first year in ib and thinking of looking at strategic finance roles after one year. If I went into a strategic finance role at a big company afterwards (wlb reasons), would there be any other exit opportunities after that? I could see myself trying to climb the levels eventually in corporate eventually to a CFO role very long term but wondering if I would be pigeonholed at that point. Would IB -> strategic finance keep any other doors open or would I be committing in that part of finance? Starting in ib I haven't had much interest in PE so not sure what else to think about longer term.
VC/VD, Tech CFO etc. My mentor moved over from M&A to strategic finance. Strategic finance is better positioned than corp dev for C-level.
VC as in venture capital? Wasn't expecting that to be an exit. What is VD? I think corp dev could be an interesting potential career too. Is IB -> strategic finance -> corp dev possible if I want to make that switch afterwards? Or would it only be an option post-IB?
The unit economics and product analysis used in strategic finance is highly transferrable to VCs, VD is venture debt. You can def switch afterwards as well. Strategic finance + banking is powerful in Corp Dev, especially within the same industry.
Thanks, Im leaning towards strategic finance to potentially climb up in corporate over time as the IB -> PE -> ?? path doesn't really interest me but wanted to see if I'd be permanently closing non-corporate roles off by making the switch. Seems like PE / HF would be closed off but Corp Dev / VC would be interesting. Would growth equity be possible? Seems like industry and operational knowledge would be especially important for those.
