Would an MBA help in switching from IT to FP&A
Let's say you have a BS in MIS and work in a call center/help desk type role. You want to switch out of IT, get an MBA from a top 20 school, and work as a Financial Analyst or Sr. Financial Analyst (FP&A) at a F500. Is that possible?
Once you get into a top MBA program, it's absolutely possible, and I think even very likely if that's what you want to do and you work for it some.
The challenge will be getting into a top MBA with that work experience.
What would offset that work experience? How about leadership positions in college or community service?
High GMAT, and leadership experience in community service/other extracurriculars post-college.
Yeah this plan is pretty feasible. Getting into schools in the 20-30 range isnt very difficult and corporate finance is doable out of any of the aforementioned schools.
Thanks
After the MBA, would I start out as a Senior Financial Analyst or just Financial Analyst?
If your goal is only to "swtich to FP&A", then yes, it's definitely doable. Difficult thing would be if your role is to "switch to Google FP&A". Gluck
Possible to switch into a Sr. FP&A Analyst role from IT? (Originally Posted: 01/22/2016)
I graduated with a BS in MIS + minor in Computer Science a few years ago, and currently work as a Systems Engineer/Database Developer. I mainly work with SQL and Excel, designing databases and analyzing data. I have no accounting certifications like the CPA or really any experience in accounting, apart from the intro financial and managerial accounting courses from undergrad. I live close to Ross School of Business, which has a top 10 PT MBA program, but would a PT MBA give me enough experience to make a career switch into FP&A? What should I do to become a Sr. FP&A Analyst within the next 2 years?
Thanks
Yes, I'd suggest the PT MBA program.
