How to get into PC(Long Term) as a Canadian Student
I'm currently a 2nd year at a Semi-Target in the city, looking to get into PC and pass through LevFin or DCM, I do understand that DCM is much less technical and "boring". I have experience at a B5 Bank doing FP&A and a Commercial Insurance Company doing Business Dev. I'm also head of one of the M&M ER Fund etc... Where to go to next, was thinking a FI desk and pivot my way through, I do recruit off-cycle as well so I have more time than someone outside of the city. Genuinely interested in credit research and lending, any insights would be appreciated
To break into private credit (PC) as a Canadian student, here's a roadmap based on the most helpful WSO content:
Leverage Your Current Experience:
Your background in FP&A at a Big 5 Bank and Business Development at a Commercial Insurance Company is a solid foundation. Highlight transferable skills like financial analysis, deal structuring, and relationship management. Your leadership role in the M&M ER Fund is also a great talking point to showcase your interest in finance and ability to manage investments.
Target Relevant Roles for the Next Step:
Networking and Off-Cycle Recruiting:
Since you're in the city and recruit off-cycle, use this to your advantage. Attend networking events, reach out to alumni, and connect with professionals in private credit, LevFin, and DCM. Highlight your genuine interest in credit and lending during these conversations.
Develop Technical Skills:
Private credit roles often require strong financial modeling and credit analysis skills. Consider taking courses or certifications to enhance your expertise. For example, WSO's Financial Modeling Package or Private Equity Interview Course can help you build the necessary technical foundation.
Long-Term Strategy:
By strategically aligning your next steps with your long-term goal, you'll position yourself well for a career in private credit. Keep building your skills, networking, and gaining relevant experience to make the transition smoother.

Get into IB or directly into the credit investing seats. Don't try to get cute with recruiting, the other credit related roles can help but IB will help just as much if not more.
