How's the "Quality Check" division in Credit? Coworkers seem to be really dumb...

I left my IB job due to stress and secured a position in a credit analyst program at a small regional bank through networking. Joining the Credit Rotation Program at the last minute, I found myself in the "Quality Assurance/Quality Check" rotation. When I spoke to an analyst who had been there for a couple of months, their social and mental demeanor seemed really unusual—I believe the politically correct term is "Neurodivergent." Others in QA also appeared a bit peculiar too, and some couldn't even hold a conversation on basic underwriting concepts. Is QA considered a remedial back-office function, possibly the least favorable/talented group in credit compared to actually underwriting real estate, tech companies, etc.?

I would try to get out of that position. The way that you described your coworkers is consistent with what I’ve seen at a BB. I used to sit behind this guy in QA and he would get there at 930, read his kindle for around 4 hours and then leave at 345. Another guy still hasn’t figured out how to plug his computer into his monitors since we went back to office in 2021/2022, so he just works off his laptop (psychotic I know). You’ll look at a lot of underwriting documents, so make the most out of it. I would try to move into an underwriting role if you want to be in credit.

The talent drop off is pretty steep, but it's really how weird and erratic people are in this group that shocks me. Here's what I've seen in the Quality Check/Quality Assurance group so far:

  1.  One dude let out a nasty fart in the middle of a 10+ person meeting in the conference room, then leaves three-quarters of the way through the meeting to take a likely rancid shit.

  2. Another guy's phone is basically his work buddy. He never speaks to anybody and he's on Twitch or scrolling through Reddit all day, and the work product he puts out is a disaster.

  3. Then there's this other guy who for some reason refuses to use the =SUM function. He adds up numbers one by one to double-check file calc.

  4.  And last but not least, we've got a dude with a whole 5 x 5 wall of fast-food menus to choose from, even though Yelp and Doordash menus exist. Actual mental illness.
