Investment Grade Credit

Hi all

What do you think of investment grade credit teams? Understand that is more likely long positions that you keep monitoring?

Speaking with a Headhunter about a public IG credit role with some dabbling in private deals too, but am not sure if that's a good area to dive into.

Currently in lev fin.

Thank you

Investment grade (IG) credit teams typically focus on analyzing and investing in higher-rated debt instruments, which are generally considered safer and less volatile compared to high-yield or distressed credit. Here are some insights based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Nature of Work:

    • IG credit roles often involve long-only positions, with a focus on monitoring and managing risk rather than actively trading or restructuring deals.
    • The work can be less dynamic compared to distressed or high-yield credit, as IG credits are less likely to face significant financial distress or restructuring scenarios.
  2. Public vs. Private Deals:

    • If the role includes some exposure to private deals, it could provide a more diverse experience. Private deals often involve deeper due diligence and negotiation, which can be a valuable skill set to develop.
    • Public IG credit, on the other hand, emphasizes liquidity and active management, as these instruments are traded in secondary markets.
  3. Career Considerations:

    • Transitioning from leveraged finance (LevFin) to IG credit could be seen as a shift towards a more stable and less volatile area of finance. However, it may not offer the same level of excitement or upside potential as distressed or high-yield credit.
    • If your long-term goal is to move into private equity, distressed investing, or hedge funds, IG credit might not be the most direct path. Roles in LevFin, high-yield, or restructuring are often more aligned with those exit opportunities.
  4. Skill Development:

    • IG credit roles can help you build strong credit analysis skills and a deep understanding of corporate balance sheets and cash flow stability.
    • However, the lack of exposure to distressed or high-yield situations might limit your ability to develop expertise in more complex, event-driven scenarios.

If you're considering this role, think about your long-term career goals and whether IG credit aligns with them. If you're looking for a more dynamic and high-risk/reward environment, you might want to explore opportunities in high-yield, distressed credit, or private credit instead.
