LBO Modeling Test

Hello, the PC firm Im at is recruiting an experienced analyst / associate. We are incorporating a modeling test as part of our recruitment efforts. Simple LBO, one case, capital structure and all other assumptions are given, no returns analysis. Is 3 hours enough time to complete this? All the historical financials are already in excel and we are providing a blank template.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding the time required for an LBO modeling test:

  1. Typical Duration:

    • 2-Hour Tests: Some firms administer 2-hour LBO modeling tests, which are considered "simple" and focus on core elements like EBITDA, capex, change in working capital, taxes, and debt module. These tests might not include a full balance sheet but focus on key elements (Q&A - 1st Year PE Associate at a US MF in Europe).
    • 3-4 Hour Tests: For more comprehensive tests, including building a 3-statement LBO model and possibly preparing a PowerPoint deck, 3-4 hours are typically allocated (Interviewing For Infrastructure Investment Roles).
  2. Complexity and Assumptions:

    • If the test includes a straightforward LBO model with all capital structure and assumptions provided, and no returns analysis, 3 hours should be sufficient. This aligns with the simpler end of the spectrum for LBO tests (Preparation for 2 hour LBO modelling test).
  3. Preparation and Practice:

    • Candidates should practice building LBO models from scratch under time constraints to ensure they can complete the task efficiently within the given time frame (Ask me anything - MM PE Associate, 1 year in).

In summary, 3 hours should be enough time to complete a simple LBO modeling test, especially if all historical financials are provided in Excel and a blank template is given. This duration aligns with the typical time allocated for similar tests in the industry.
