Based on previous WSO threads, here are some insights on securing private credit internships for rising sophomores:

  1. Networking: Start networking with regional and industry-specific boutiques. Building relationships early can help you get your foot in the door.
  2. Boutique Banks and Small PE Firms: Look into boutique banks or small/mid-market private equity firms, especially in major financial hubs like New York or Boston. These firms are more likely to offer opportunities to sophomores.
  3. Local Opportunities: Consider local investment banks or private equity firms. Smaller firms may have more flexible internship programs and can provide valuable experience.
  4. Research and Apply Early: Begin your search early and apply to as many relevant positions as possible. The earlier you start, the better your chances of securing an internship.

If you need more specific names of firms or additional advice, feel free to ask!

Just reach out to a bunch for coffee chats - you can find solid funds who would be open for an unpaid internship and if they’re smaller/starting an analyst program, you’d probably be working on the same stuff an AN1 would. Larger funds might have a junior analyst program but I haven’t heard of many structured sophomore ones.

  • Reach out to members on your alumni board. Especially if there are members in IB/PE, they can help point you to firms. If they’re on the board, they’re trying to help kids in all fields so they’ll have a decent grasp on PC shops and could potentially make some introductions.

  • If you or your school has a professor from industry, they should be able to give you a list/make introductions. One of my credit professors is an insane networker and she connected me with a bunch of firms.
