Speaking with journalists - need advice
Hi - a journalist at a major newspaper reached out to me as a person “to get to know”. Is this just fishing on their part / spam and if not, should I respond or is it risky to my career?

Career Resources
Based on the most helpful WSO content, engaging with journalists can be a double-edged sword. Here are some key considerations:
Assess Their Intentions: Journalists often reach out to build a network of sources or gain insights into specific industries. This isn't necessarily "fishing" or spam, but you should evaluate their credibility and the publication's reputation.
Protect Your Career: If you decide to respond, be cautious about what you share. Avoid discussing sensitive or proprietary information about your company or clients. Always assume that anything you say could be used in a story.
Set Boundaries: If you’re open to speaking, clarify the nature of the conversation upfront. For example, ask if it’s on or off the record and what topics they’re interested in.
Consult Your Employer: If your company has a media policy, follow it. Some firms require employees to notify PR or compliance teams before speaking with the press.
Weigh the Risks and Benefits: Engaging with a journalist can help build your personal brand, but it’s essential to ensure it aligns with your career goals and doesn’t jeopardize your current role.
If you're unsure, it’s okay to politely decline or redirect them to your company’s PR team.

Don’t do it
0 upside for massive risk lol.
There is upside in terms of visibility no?
1. Journalists are coming to YOU for visibility.
2. You’re an analyst, what exactly are you going to do with the limited intelligence a journalist gives to you?
Maybe I misunderstood but I suspect it could be relating to the HPS/BLK deal since I used to work at one of these firms. I assumed they are reaching out to ask questions regarding culture or something - I was planning to remain anon if I was going to comment but I thought it could be good for my personal visibility if I am mentioned in a publication?
Should I be requesting intel as well if I engage?
