This is probably going to sound very naive, but how do you start a credit fund?

are there any good resources or TurnKey solutions to get a credit fund started? I've seen many opportunities over the years and always brokered them out and I have a pool of investors who have always asked if they would just be able to put cash directly with me to manage but had never really seriously considered it before now.

Starting a credit fund involves several critical steps and considerations. Based on previous WSO threads, here are some key points to focus on:

  1. Capital:

    • Raising Capital: The primary challenge is securing the amount of capital you need on favorable terms. It's essential to have a methodical approach to consistently raising capital, often referred to as a "capital machine."
  2. Lead Generation:

    • Deal Sourcing: Efficiently sourcing deals is crucial. This involves cutting through the noise and focusing on generating leads for potential investments.
  3. Structuring and Legal Setup:

    • Legal Framework: Many successful credit investors have law degrees, which helps them navigate the intricacies of deal structuring and legal considerations. It's advisable to consult with legal professionals to ensure your fund is set up correctly.
  4. Operational Setup:

    • Infrastructure: Setting up the necessary infrastructure, including office space, technology, and administrative support, is essential. Some have even started funds in shared office spaces like WeWork.
  5. Investor Relations:

    • Communication with LPs: Maintaining transparent and effective communication with your limited partners (LPs) is vital. This includes explaining your investment strategy, risk management, and the "secret sauce" that differentiates your fund.
  6. Resources and Turnkey Solutions:

    • While specific turnkey solutions are not detailed in the provided context, leveraging professional networks and consulting with experienced fund managers can provide valuable insights and resources.
