Best Sector to Cover in ER

Looking to hear some insights from you guys on what the best sectors are to cover in equity research. I know it is to each their own, but if you could break down:

  • sector you cover
  • do you enjoy it
  • how many hours/week (I know it’s depending on the analyst, but still would like to know)
  • what do you like about the sector?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated !!

Wild that you’re doing 90h+. Don’t know anyone across multiple banks doing >60h in biotech. Not doubting you, but as I said, that’s wild. Hope your comp reflects the hours

TMT or Equity Strategy. TMT is exciting and has real alpha to be made based on growth. If you nail the trends, and you identify those exposed to trends with the right fundamentals and correlation, L/S can do absolute wonders. Equity Strategy gives you a top-down, generalist perspective of equities. great if you wanna branch out from a particular sector, understand economics and politics, and not do intricate firm financial modeling. If you can do Equity Strategy and a particular sector, that would be the best way to become a versatile investor. You get top-down and bottom-up experience, you specialize in a sector but get enough experience with other sectors in order to understand and study it. Hours? You’re gonna work long hours, just accept it. I personally think ER > IB overall, hours notwithstanding, simply because public markets are more fun and larger. Also, you’re way more active.

just find something you enjoy and stop overthinking it
