Boutique ER Analyst to Hedge Fund?

To make a long story short, I got a job at a boutique ER firm straight out of undergrad, and have been there for 2 years. In those 2 years, i've picked up coverage of a handful of names as the lead analyst. I'd like to eventually make it out of the sell-side to a L/S hedge fund. Is this a realistic jump, or do you think it'd be necessary to go to a BB first before that jump is made? Thanks in advance!
