Buy Side vs. Sell side analyst?

I'm new to the forums, and I am trying to decide between buy-side and sell-side straight out of undergrad. I am fairly certain that I do not want to go into IB, so at this point, sell-side is pretty much a no for me. I'm looking for others opinion on this? I come from a non-target school, so getting into IB Is somewhat unrealistic. However, I have connected with numerous PM's and analyst at buy-side firms and I am fairly certain that I have a pretty good shot at locking down an internship at one of them.
Do you guys really think buy-side ER is dying? What are the salary differentials between buy and sell?
Word of advice, if you think this is an appropriate way to ask for anything (e.g. advice, jobs, etc.), you're probably going to have a tough time getting ahead. I don't know if you're trolling or just ignorant, but the way your post comes across is condescending and generally uninformed.
This matter aside, with regards to your actual question, buy-side ER is consolidating and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. In the case of compensation, you're a kid from a non-target. Unless there's a short term liquidity need, it would be silly to focus too much on the salary as opposed to the learning opportunity.
Please explain how does my OP come across in an inappropriate manner? I am genuinely confused. I am an undergraduate student posting a generalized question on an anonymous forum, at what point did I come across as ignorant?

Moreover, you 'know' that the sell-side is not for you. At this point, I already don't like the impression I'm getting of you. IF however, you're coming from some top notch school and have a reason for believing you have a choice in the matter, maybe it makes sense (though it'd be weird that you'd be asking for the opinion of complete strangers in such a scenario).

Combined with the fact that you equate sell-side to IBD without regards for sell-side research, I'm fairly convinced you have put in little to no leg work in understanding what this field (buy side, sell side, or anything for that matter) entails.

And on top of that, you think getting into IBD is unrealistic coming from a non-target when going to the buy side is literally something that kids from H/S/W fight tooth and nail to get into AFTER wasting 2-3 years of their life in the sell-side? I have no idea what you've been reading or who you've been talking to, but I think you need to go back to the drawing board.

Ok, so why ask anyone anything? You've plainly stated that the sell-side is a non starter (despite oddly equating it to only IBD). You have these contacts on the buy-side that you're "fairly certain" can lead to an internship. Stop rubbing it in everyone else's face if there is literally no incremental value to be added from it. It makes you look like a dick.

While this response is probably a bit snarkier than necessary, I hope it got the message across. And for what it's worth, I am on the buy side. If I ever got an informational interview request written in the style of your post, I would almost certainly not recommend you for anything, nevermind an internship or job. Take it as advice and improve. Or not, it's not my problem. Regardless, best of luck in your job hunt and career development.
