Can I ask BB bank to match my competitor's job offer?
So I got an offer a week ago for equity research analyst at a bulge bracket. I have an offer at the ER firm I interned at the summer of 2021 and it's around 10k more. I like the BB more but I can't really afford to turn down more money especially since I have crushing student loans. Can I ask them to match that offer? Will they rescind their offer?
You can try, but BBs have standardized pay packages, they would just think you are uninformed about how they operate. Do you have a view on all-in comp at your other shop? Are you sure that you will be better off at the other shop?
All in comp will definitely be higher at the other shop but this is a top ranked BB in ER
$10K is nothing in the long-run. No harm in asking BB to match. But if they say no, go with the opportunity that has better LT potential. Exit ops for a BB team that's II ranked is going to be much better than a smaller ER role that pays $10K more...
my old firm is also II ranked, so it's apples to apples
You’re going to pay student loans for many years, so make sure your maximizing your income not just in the first few years. I don’t know what’s your other offer, but the NPV of choosing the BB offer is probably much higher.
