Did I f*ck up in my interview??
So I landed an interview about a week ago in a coverage group I would have loved to cover… but they asked me twice if I was interested in the buyside eventually.
I am.
I was initially going to say no I want to be on the sell side for a while, but then they hit me with why the sell side and I couldn’t give a good response.
I basically told them that I don’t know and that both jobs have pros and cons but it was evident that I clearly wanted to go to the Buyside.
Maybe I’m overthinking it but it did not go well.
I don’t think anyone will take issue with someone wanting buyside especially since it’s so common, but inability to articulate why you want sellside in a sellside interview might be an issue.
I mean to go to the Buyside of course! Jk I actually do enjoy the public equities
The way I articulate this (I’m in the same boat as you) is by emphasizing the attractiveness of the client-facing role of the sell-side versus the purely isolated conditions of a buy-side analyst.
