Equity Research Recruiting Timeline + Off Cycle Opps

Hey monkeys,

Quick question: One of the routes I'm considering going forward for my career is Equity Research. I was still completing an internship during the time many of these postings went live, and have submitted applications and networking a good amount, but I know the chances here are slim.

I've read that ER firms will have occasional openings as analysts/associates leave (as with other biz), but I also know this may not be a viable opportunity for someone who no prior ER experience.

I'm curious as to how often this happens, and what the best ways to stay on top and take advantage of these opportunities are. Even if the chances are slim to none, it's still worth a shot.

Thanks!

Equity Research recruiting can indeed be challenging, especially for those without prior ER experience. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know:

  1. Recruiting Timeline:

    • Equity Research roles are often filled sporadically rather than through structured recruiting cycles. Openings typically arise when:
      • Analysts or associates leave for other opportunities (buy-side, other banks, etc.).
      • A team expands due to increased coverage or new hires.
      • A triggering event occurs, such as a senior analyst leaving or a junior spot opening up.
  2. Off-Cycle Opportunities:

    • Off-cycle hiring is common in ER, but these roles are often filled through word-of-mouth or internal referrals. Networking is critical to staying informed about these openings.
    • Firms may not actively advertise these roles, so building relationships with professionals in the field can give you an edge.
  3. Challenges for Candidates Without ER Experience:

    • Breaking into ER without prior experience is tough, as firms often prioritize candidates with relevant internships or backgrounds. However, unconventional paths can work. For example, showcasing strong business instincts, financial acumen, and a willingness to learn can make you stand out.
    • Some successful candidates have even offered to work for free initially to prove their value and gain experience.
  4. Staying on Top of Opportunities:

    • Regularly check job boards, firm websites, and LinkedIn for openings.
    • Attend industry events, webinars, or bootcamps to expand your network and demonstrate your interest in ER.
    • Keep in touch with recruiters and professionals in the field to stay updated on potential openings.

While the chances may seem slim, persistence, networking, and a proactive approach can significantly improve your odds. Good luck!
