From Engineering to ER
Advice needed! I have been working for a top engineering consult firm for almost 2 years with experience in environmental engineering, civil infrastructures. I have a MPhil degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering with research related to renewable energy. Is it possible for me to transfer to ER in the industries like public utilities, energy and gas in HK or SG? Any qualification is requested, like CFA? Is MBA a better choice to start the transfer? I do not have much financial background but have started some reading in this field. Thanks a lot!
I think you could do it. MBA probably would be your best bet, but the CFA might do the trick also. Really depends which firms you are looking at. Go and find some analyst or industry reports and get a feel for how they right, look at things, etc. Maybe set up some informational networking calls with some research people in the fields you specialize in to ping them and see what their opinions are about you making the switch. Good luck!
Breaking into Wall Street Equity Research for Indian Engineer (Originally Posted: 02/10/2013)
I have been working in an IT firm for 2.5 years. I took my GMAT in October and scored 720(Q50 , V37) on it. I am appearing for CFA level 1 in June 2013.What is the best path to break into Equity Research. There are three alternatives currently in front of me.
1.Clear Level 1 and try to break into a boutique equity research firm in India and then go for MBA in US after a year or two. 2.Stay in current field ,get Level 2 and apply to US B schools.Got just got promoted and will be able to get another in a years time. 3.Get my MBA in India - scored in top 1 percentile in entrance tests - just received interview invites from couple of target business schools.
You can get into ER without MBA. CFA is valued highly in India for now.
If you can make it into the top IIMs, you may have a shot at IB/PE etc. Be warned though. you the general IT male and they prefer IITians. A LOT.
A top MBA in USA won't be possible with your current profile.
My suggestion : clear CFA level 1, get into ER and then see your options again.
ER analysts with Engineering Backgrounds (Originally Posted: 02/11/2014)
What industries do ER analysts with engineering degrees generally go for. Apart from Technology (Comp Sci) and Pharma, I cant think where an engineering background might be helpful. Where else would it be helpful to have an engineering background?
I am an Engineer but want to know this to broaden my networking efforts
Utilities, capital goods, construction, shipbuilding, aerospace, steel? Depends what kind of engineering I guess
Energy, specifically petroleum engineers covering E&Ps or service companies
