How long should I wait before accepting I got dinged?

Hey all, I interviewed as a lateral candidate for a BB ER team in-person with the lead analyst. I honestly thought I did well but it’s been 2 weeks since and it’s been radio silent. What are some protocols I should follow i.e. emailing HR, emailing the hiring analyst, etc. before I accept that I didn’t get the next interview/offer?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you should consider:

  1. Two Weeks of Silence is Common: While two weeks might feel like a long time, it’s not unusual for lateral processes to take time, especially at larger firms like BBs. Internal approvals, scheduling, and other bureaucratic delays can slow things down.

  2. Follow-Up Email: If you haven’t already, send a polite follow-up email to the lead analyst or the person who coordinated your interview. Keep it professional and express your continued interest in the role. Example:
"Hi Name, I hope this email finds you well. I wanted to follow up regarding my recent interview for the [Position] role. I remain very interested in the opportunity and would appreciate any updates on the process. Please let me know if there’s anything further I can provide. Thank you for your time and consideration."

  3. Avoid HR Unless Necessary: As noted in WSO threads, HR is often not involved in lateral hiring decisions until after an offer is made. Reaching out to HR might not yield much information.

  4. Timing Varies by Firm: Some firms, like Goldman Sachs, are notorious for having disorganized lateral processes, with candidates waiting weeks or even months for updates. However, if you’ve heard nothing after 3-4 weeks, it’s reasonable to assume you may not have advanced.

  5. Networking for Insights: If you have any connections at the firm, consider reaching out to them for informal insights into the process or timeline.

  6. Keep Moving Forward: While waiting, continue applying and networking for other opportunities. Lateral hiring is often unpredictable, and it’s best to keep your options open.

If you don’t hear back after your follow-up email within a week or two, it’s safe to assume you may not have progressed. However, don’t let this discourage you—lateral hiring is competitive, and persistence is key!
