Is Equity Research really decent at getting exit opps to top AM and HFs?

Question

It's hard to corroborate this claim on LinkedIn, since it's hard to get linkedin to search correctly. Can people name some exits they've seen in the past?

Quality of Analyst is clearly key. Some PMs like to hire from firms where the research fits with their investment process (less training). Others will take a junior analyst (sub 5 years) that has the skills irrespective of firm.

Not sure why the focus on going with top firm when the focus ought to be 1) top manager (doesn’t last forever) 2) potential analyst upside (not strictly comp, more ability to learn and develop as an analyst) within role 3) age of management team (unless you think you will start a new product as a PM with the firm) when might the PM retire?

My two cents: it's certainly a traditional route (equity research to AM or HFs), but the nature of your particular job (and the senior analyst or Director of Research you work for) will have a lot to do with whether it's a fairly straightforward transition or a treacherous one.

Just as an example: if you're in a job where you're working at an intense pace, all the time, it's really hard to job hunt aggressively while also doing your regular job.
