Join Team with Established Analyst vs Grow With Analyst
I have two opportunities here and I’m struggling to determine which opportunity is more promising.
I could join a team with an analyst who is established been covering the names for a while and is an expert in the industry at this point.
On the other hand, I could join a team with a somewhat newly promoted senior analyst who is very knowledgeable in his space but still learning with coverage. This is a situation where I can grow my knowledge base with the analyst, become his right hand man, and build out the team/franchise.
What are the pros and cons of each and what would you recommend?
If pay is the same, choose the former. If pay is higher at the second, choose the latter. You want a solid foundation early on in your career to grow your skills. I imagine the established analyst has a larger team and it’s the associates that generally mentor you. Analyst does some, but not most. If you want to be an analyst before your analyst retires, you can always jump to a smaller firm. Also, you need to post what firms/tier firms and pay. I just assumed the less established and faster promotion is at a smaller firm, because that’s usually the case. And the smaller firm usually pays less as well.
