MD laterals?
Hey everyone — just wanted to get some thoughts on this.
I had a coffee chat last year with an IB MD who had a really unique background: he started as a product manager in the auto industry, transitioned into equity research (covering autos pre-’08), climbed the ranks to Research MD, then went on to an executive role at an industry company, left to run his own business, and now he’s an MD in investment banking covering mobility.
When I asked about the move from ER MD to IB MD, he kind of brushed it off, but I found it super interesting. Curious — has anyone else seen this kind of transition before? Is it common for senior equity research professionals to move into IB at that level?
Would love to hear any anecdotes or insight.
Transitions from Equity Research (ER) MD to Investment Banking (IB) MD are not common but are certainly possible, especially when the individual has a unique skill set or deep industry expertise. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights:
Industry Expertise as a Key Driver: Senior ER professionals, particularly those who have specialized in a specific sector, can leverage their deep knowledge and relationships to transition into IB. For example, someone covering autos in ER might have built strong connections with industry executives and developed a nuanced understanding of the sector, making them valuable in IB roles focused on that industry.
Networking and Relationships: ER professionals often have better networking opportunities compared to junior IB professionals. They interact directly with clients, investors, and industry leaders, which can open doors to roles in IB, especially at senior levels.
Unconventional Career Paths: The example you provided highlights a non-linear career trajectory, which is not unheard of but remains rare. Moving from ER MD to an executive role, running a business, and then transitioning to IB MD demonstrates adaptability and a strong ability to sell one's experience and value proposition.
Challenges in Transitioning: While possible, such transitions are not the norm. IB and ER require different skill sets—IB focuses more on deal execution and client pitching, while ER emphasizes analysis and forecasting. For an ER MD to move into IB, they would need to demonstrate their ability to handle the transactional and client-facing aspects of banking.
Anecdotal Evidence: There are cases of ER professionals moving into IB, but these transitions typically occur earlier in their careers (e.g., ER associates moving to IB associate roles). At the MD level, it’s less common but can happen if the individual has a compelling story, strong relationships, and a track record of success in their sector.
In summary, while not a typical path, the transition from ER MD to IB MD is feasible for those with exceptional industry expertise, strong networks, and the ability to adapt to the demands of investment banking.
