Networking with Senior Analysts
I'm currently an associate at a MM firm, but have the desire to move to a bigger shop. I started networking again.
When I was in school I had the most success networking when I reached out to the senior analysts. It was relatively easy to come up with a "why" in the initial outreach (want to learn more about equity research, what their day-to-day entails, etc). However, I can't use the same reasoning now as an experienced hire.
If the senior analysts doesn't have an opening in their team what would be the best "why" for the outreach? Right now the only "why" I can come up with is learning more about their sector. Happy to hear other ideas!
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some strategies for networking with senior analysts as an experienced hire:
Express Interest in Their Expertise: Frame your outreach around their unique insights and expertise in the sector. For example, mention that you're looking to deepen your understanding of specific trends or challenges in their coverage area and would value their perspective.
Discuss Industry Trends: Highlight your interest in discussing broader industry trends or recent developments in their sector. This shows you're informed and genuinely interested in their work.
Seek Career Advice: Ask for advice on navigating your career path within equity research or transitioning to a larger firm. Senior analysts often appreciate being seen as mentors.
Build a Relationship, Not Just a Transaction: Make it clear that you're not just looking for a job lead but are genuinely interested in building a professional relationship. This could involve asking about their career journey, challenges they've faced, or their views on the future of the industry.
Leverage Commonalities: If you share an alma mater, professional certification (like CFA), or mutual connections, use that as a natural entry point for your outreach.
Offer Value: If possible, offer something in return, such as insights from your current role or sector that might be relevant to their work. This can make the interaction more mutually beneficial.
Remember, networking is about creating a genuine connection, so tailor your outreach to the individual and their background.
