Private Equity / Equity Research Bonus pay?

What is the typical bonus for first year analysts in private equity and/or equity research. I have an associate that I graduated with last year and he works for a small equity research company. He says he made 100k in bonus last year alone and almost topped 200k in all in pay for his first year out of college including signing, salary and EOY. Possible? Unlikely? Or happens all the time? I know a little about NY starting salaries i know the base is typically 70k at the BB for first year analyst but i know nothing about EOY bonuses, I would have thought the large banks would pay the highest bonuses but is it possible the small firms actually have the edge up in compensation to new coming talent?
