Hi Everyone! I just have a quick question on how common it is to go from REIT to ER, and how that career path typically takes shape. I am currently a senior analyst at a large REIT (>15B UM), and the "dream" for me has always been to get into equity research someday. Coming from a non-target, I feel lucky to even be where I am today, so while at the REIT, should I be working on something like a MBA or even a CFA to help make the switch a few years down the road? I am thinking I could go into RE ER or something similar. Anything helps!

I work at a sell-side REIT shop. We do have a few guys that started at REITs within our coverage universe, but they're in more quant or macro-type roles (as opposed to ER). I think its a better fit with the skillset they developed at the REITs. Nearly all of our ER guys have MBAs or CFA/progress toward CFA, along with previous investment-related experience. That gives you some background. Assuming you want to cover REITs, I'd say each firm is different. But I can say with confidence that CFA will help you (at least in getting interviews).
