REIT to ER

Hi Everyone!

I just have a quick question on how common it is to go from REIT to ER, and how that career path typically takes shape. I am currently a senior analyst at a large REIT (>15B UM), and the "dream" for me has always been to get into equity research someday. Coming from a non-target, I feel lucky to even be where I am today, so while at the REIT, should I be working on something like a MBA or even a CFA to help make the switch a few years down the road? I am thinking I could go into RE ER or something similar. Anything helps!
