Seeking Advice regarding LO AM Equity Research career progession
I recently graduated from undergrad and secured a position as a buy-side Equity Research Analyst at a BB AM / Tier 2ish LO. Despite having a multi-year contract, I've heard that after the contract ends in LO AM, it's often challenging to secure promotions, with encouragement to seek opportunities elsewhere or pursue B School. I'm very passionate about investing and ER, aiming to pursue the CFA designation over the next few years. While I'm not keen on attending B School, I'm concerned about my prospects at the end of my contract. Ideally, I'd like to progress within the same firm, but there are no guarantees. Given several years of buy-side ER experience, I'm curious about the feasibility of jumping to roles in L/S equity or tier 1 AM firms such as Wellington.
What suggestions would you give on how to best position myself for the future?
Also, it seems like LO Equity Research roles are constantly looked down upon on in these forums, or at least in comparison to SS ER and even IB. What is the reason for this? I would’ve thought producing investment ideas with tangible results with actual capital deployed would hold more value?
