I'm a L3 CFA candidate and looking to make a career change in the ER industry. Love doing research and analytical work and think I could have a lot of success. Would like to start networking with analysts/associates in the industry and heard to send out my own research reports. Should I prepare these before I start networking or can it wait?

Yes you should have a pitch/report/model prepared, particularly if not lateraling from another ER role as it shows you do "love doing research".
Thousand percent agree. Tons of people reach out to network. Percent that send a report is much smaller. Guess who I was more inclined to follow up with?
One kid reached out with a report that was so high quality that I forwarded it to the director of research for internships after I spoke with him. Kid crushed the interviews, got an internship and then a full time. He was at a no-name school, super non-target, no way he would've got through the HR filter otherwise.
The whole ER job search game is 100% about avoiding interaction with HR until you have gotten the job.
