Starting in BB SS ER soon - what to know?

Hello everyone,

Last month I made a post about interviews and luckily I nabbed one of the roles. Still waiting on official paperwork to come through but I've always been an optimist and I'm sure this process will go as planned. My question is, as someone who isn't coming from sell-side research, what should I know for starting out in the role and being able to hit the ground running, what should my priorities be (as far as preparing to start), and if there was anything that was helpful to you all when you first started your SS career, I'd appreciate hearing it.

Thanks everyone!

I’d say don’t be afraid to ask questions. It shows your senior analyst that you’re engaging, thinking, and learning. It also saves time in case you’re focused in the wrong areas.

Second is prioritize accuracy over speed. The last thing you want is for your senior to lose confidence and end up checking everything you do - which doesn’t help anyone.

Big congrats on the role! In all honesty it all depends on your senior and how they like to run their franchise. I'd say most are decent humans but some are a bit rude so it's vital you figure out how your senior likes to do their research/writing and get in the mindset of knowing how to gauge a person's mood/behavior.

In the mean time being start reading market news, macro trends, and give your brain a break. Once you start you'll notice free time isn't really that common due to all the news flow/proprietary research your team is doing. However, the long hours don't seem that long when you're constantly writing/modeling/talking.

My absolute biggest tip is to be prepared to learn everyday. Expect your first year to be somewhat of a struggle, and that's ok! It's all about your ability to retain new knowledge, tie it back to your teams thesis, and be coherent when sharing something you know about. Good luck!

Lot of good advice here already, but something you should absolutely prioritize is passing your FINRA exams, and doing so the first time. You can't do much without them besides grunt work in the background (which is honestly what you will mostly be doing at the beginning anyway) and banks don't have extended patience for someone who can't pass them.
